During a hatch of Ephemera danica, trout often do not rise on winged insects floating on the surface, giving preference to hatching nymphs. This pattern does not float well and stands mid-subemerged (or trapped) in the water film thus giving the appearance of a nymph which has split the exuvia and is struggling to get rid of it before floating freely on the surface.
